Shihan Kyoshi, 8th Dan

De Jong Shihan currently holds the rank of 8th Dan Shihan Kyoshi, awarded to him by Yamaguchi Goshi Saiko Shihan. He is chief instructor for Goju-Kai Karate-do in Scandinavia and is the supervisor for I.K.G.A. (International Karate-Do-Goju Kai Association) throughout Europe.

De Jong Shihan began his Budo career in Sydney Australia, in the early sixties, training in Judo. After several years he came in contact with and made the transition to Karate. As a result of dedication and hard training he was soon awarded his black belt.

In order to further his knowledge in the Martial Arts he then set out in the early seventies to travel throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He studied Kung Fu in Malaysia, and whilst in Thailand he trained with the Thai-boxers. During his stay in Middle East he successfully taught karate and in Europe he competed in and won various international Semi-contact and traditional tournaments. Eventually he settled in Sweden where he became a member of the Swedish national karate team.

Due to increasing demands as a teacher he withdrew from active competition and in 1979 at the age of 36 in order to devote his efforts to teaching and spreading the art of Goju karate.

Under the leadership of De Jong Shihan, Goju-Kai Karate-do has advanced and grown in numbers throughout Scandinavia. Many of his students have represented their respective countries and some have been very successful in international tournaments.Over the years De Jong Shihan has spent considerable time in Japan studying the way of Goju-Kai Karate-Do under Grand Master Kaiso Gogen Yamaguchi and his son Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi Hanshi.

De Jong Shihan has made karate his way of life, and he can truly be called an ambassador for the Martial Arts.
